Title:  Commercial Finance Analyst - NESO

Location:

Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA

Division:  NESO Financial Strategy
Job Type:  Full Time
Requisition Number:  70423
Department:  Finance
Job Function:  Finance and Risk
Description:

About the role

National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) strength lies in our people. Together, we’re shaping the future where clean, affordable energy is accessible for all. Every day is an opportunity to make a real difference, accelerating the progress of sustainable GB energy, keeping people connected and society thriving as we create a brighter tomorrow.

We are looking for a Commercial Finance Analyst to join NESO’s Commercial Finance team – a strategic finance function that helps NESO make informed decisions by providing expert financial insight and commercial guidance.

Commercial Finance ensures that initiatives, projects, and decisions are tested for their financial impact and commercial implications. Sometimes this means shaping solutions directly; other times it’s about asking the right questions to ensure the commercial dimension isn’t missed. Our goal is simple: every decision must be technically strong and commercially sound.

You’ll work in a dynamic, collaborative environment to assess the financial impact of initiatives, support investor engagement, and ensure decisions are commercially sound. This includes contributing to market intelligence, financial modelling, and investor mapping to bring investor perspectives into NESO’s strategy.

The role requires curiosity, analytical rigour, and the ability to work across teams to embed commercial thinking into everything we do. Whether it’s shaping solutions or asking the right questions, you’ll help ensure NESO’s decisions are both technically strong and financially robust

This role is based in Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key accountabilities

  • Supporting commercial input across NESO’s departments and with external SMEs, bringing a commercial perspective into decisions at any stage of a project and ensuring stakeholder needs are met.
  • Gathering, analysing, and reporting on commercial risks, investor sentiment, emerging trends, relevant policy or regulatory developments, and feed this intelligence into commercial design and decision-making.
  • Producing analysis and financial modelling, including scenario modelling, cost-benefit assessments, economic models and investment appraisals to inform internal decision-making, test design options, and support external engagement.
  • Contributing to investor relations delivery by preparing analysis-based materials, and ensuring consistent, clear messages are shared with the investment community.
  • Conducting financial analysis covering cost-effectiveness, liquidity, solvency, and cash flow metrics, producing clear recommendations to optimise value for money and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
  • Supporting the design and development of new commercial frameworks, including risk allocation models, investment frameworks, and enabling works.

About you

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:

  • Brings experience from banking, finance, commercial or accounting disciplines, with a strong analytical mindset.
  • Experience in Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), financial scenario modelling, and interpreting financial statements.
  • Strong communicator with excellent writing skills, interpersonal skills, and stakeholder management.
  • Confident applying finance concepts like WACC, risk-sharing mechanisms, and debt structuring to real-world challenges.
  • Supported commercial research, capital market analysis, and investor engagement with clarity and precision.

About what you'll get

A competitive salary between £49,000 - £55,000pa – dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

We are also providing advice to the Government on achieving a decarbonised power system by 2030.

So, join the energy transformation and help shape the future.

Your energy, our future, together.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

NESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
