As Communications Officer you will be supporting the Communications Lead for RESP (Regional Energy Strategic Planning) and the Engagement and Communications team, which is part of NESO’s Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) role.  

A large part of this role includes developing FAQs where you will be working closely with subject matter experts across the wider Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) team. Another main function of the role is to create PowerPoint slide decks using creative design skills. It will also include assisting with website updates, copywriting articles, supporting webinars, assisting with forward planning and much more. 

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. You will be expected to attend regular monthly meetings in Warwick or Birmingham, and away days in other locations around the country every few months. We are open to full time and part-time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.  

NESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

Key Accountabilites

• Support the Communications Lead for Regional Energy Strategic Planning (RESP) and working flexibly across the wider SEP team with other communications leads as required
• Create excellent quality PowerPoint slide decks, which communicate key messages and technical, complex information in a clear and engaging way. Excellent visual design skills in PowerPoint is highly desirable for this role
• Create and manage the development of FAQs and lines to take, working closely with subject matter experts
• Create website copy and articles and assist with website updates
• Create newsletter articles, social media posts, and press releases
• Develop animation and video and scripts
• Assist with RESP related media enquiries and RESP inbox enquiries
• Contribute to development of communications key messages
• Assist with the organisation and coordination of RESP external events and webinars and support development of communications for external events and webinars

• Work closely with communications teams across NESO, such as the central communications team, brand and corporate affairs teams, to ensure alignment and approval of communications across NESO
• Work closely with content leads across SEP and adhere to NESO style guides and branding
• Work closely with the NESO internal communications as required
• Contribute to Engagement and Communications plans as required
• Work with SEP Content Leads and adhere to NESO style and brand guidelines

• Excellent PowerPoint design skills, being able to create visually engaging slides that communicate key messages and complex information for technical and non-technical audiences 
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to adapt for different types of audiences
• Strong attention to detail
• Proactive and motivated
• Excellent team worker
• Good organisation and planning skills, with ability to keep up to date with document management and version control
• Ability to challenge and think creatively
• Ability to summarise complex information into high level communications for non-technical audiences

About what you'll get

A competitive salary between £42,000 - £50,000 per annum – dependent on experience and capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
