Location:

Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA

Division:  NESO Strategic Network Development
Job Type:  Full Time
Requisition Number:  70400
Department:  ESO
Job Function:  Engineering
Description:

About The Role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) sits at the heart of the UK’s energy transition, aiming to produce first of their kinds strategic energy plans across generation, transmission and distribution. NESO’s vision is to provide a future where everyone has access to reliable, clean and affordable energy; our work will be a catalyst for change across the global community.

The Electricity Network Strategy Development & Implementation teams sit within the Strategic Energy Planning directorate, aiming to produce GB’s first Centralised Strategic Network Plan, setting out the future of GB’s energy networks. In these high-profile teams, we currently have roles for Strategy Engineers to lead the development of the new strategic network planning policies and processes.

This could include aspects such as interactions with future seabed leasing rounds, translation of government ambitions, collaboration with European counterparts, and alignment to domestic planning processes and reforms.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, to set the direction by developing the strategies needed to deliver co-ordinated network design recommendations, embedding these into business-as-usual processes.

This role will be based from our Warwick HQ, and we continue to offer hybrid working between office and home.

We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About Us

The creation of National Energy System Operator (NESO) is driven by an urgent need to unify and optimise our approach to energy. A more integrated and coordinated strategy is needed to meet the unprecedented challenges of climate change, ensuring secure energy supply, and keeping costs manageable for consumers.

Join us and empower your potential, energise our team, and be part of something bigger.

Your energy, our future, together.

About The National Energy System Operator

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

About You

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey:

The Strategy Engineer roles require a variety of skillsets across personnel contributing in teams to deliver to time and quality. Hence, across both teams, the following attributes are desirable, although a candidate is not required to have all of the following to be successful:

  • Baseline Understanding of an area of the Energy System: Due to the breadth and depth of the energy system, it is not expected for the candidate to have a wide range of experience across the entire energy system. However, experience across an area such as power system engineering, electricity transmission and distribution, connections, energy innovation, or energy policy is desired so that a base level of knowledge can be built upon. A desire to learn is preferred with experience of quickly engaging and understanding topics beneficial.

  • Multi-Disciplinary Teamworking: Ability to work with technical experts across multiple subject areas (including policy, economics, power systems, and data science) to quickly gain insights across strategy areas, from which to understand and define problems.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in creating and presenting material that clearly “tells the story” to the audience (such as using the SCQA method). Ability to share key strategic insights through clear, concise, short reports and slide packs, ensuring that the key messages are relevant and pitched appropriately for the audience (from executive level to non-technical audiences).

  • Strategic Thinking: Strategic thinker and curious mindset, being able to “see the bigger picture”, and connect multiple themes and activities, with a full “end-to-end” approach. Ability to present information in a novel format which allows a variety of audiences to engage with problems and provide solutions.

  • Process Development: Ability to take a high-level concept and turn it into a pragmatic set of steps which can be followed by SMEs.

  • Problem Solving: Experience working in uncertain and adaptable projects where the “answer” is subject to a number of unknowns which may change the course of the project during its development.  Comfortable dealing with uncertainty and working within teams to help guide SMEs through this.

  • Stakeholder (or Client) Relationship Experience: Ability to build high quality relationships both internally and externally and using those to achieve the required outcomes.

  • Project Management Experience: Experience manging teams using tools such as work package breakdowns, Gantt charts, risk management, or similar and delivering projects to time, quality and cost.
